Coventry Karate teaches traditional Shotokan style karate. Karate-do is a highly dynamic martial art offering many benefits. Using the entire body, one can develop agility, stamina, flexibility, coordination and self-defense skills. As a martial art, it is distinguished from sport or other activities by emphasizing character traits such as benevolence, self-control, perseverance and patience.


About Us
Japan Karate Association - World Federation (JKA) – The JKA is a worldwide organization headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. Established in 1948 with Master Gichin Funakoshi as its chief instructor, karate practice was formalized into a style called Shotokan. The JKA emphasizes character development and was recognized by Japan’s Ministry of Education in 1958. The JKA has member organizations in over 130 countries. Shotokan Karate-Do International (SKDI) – SKDI is one of the three JKA sanctioned regional organizations in the United States. SKDI is headquartered in New York and was established in 1968 by Master Masataka Mori, 9th Dan (1932-2018). With many throughout the world seeking his instruction, SKDI members include students throughout the United States and from many other countries in the western hemisphere. Sensei Shu Takahashi is currently chief instructor and chairman of the organization.
Coventry Karate is a member of the JKA and SKDI and classes are taught in the traditions of these organizations. Standards are consistent with those established by some of the world’s most accomplished masters. A student’s rank within our organization is recognized at JKA dojos throughout the world.


Chief Instructor - John Seifert
Sensei John Seifert is a 6th degree black belt with the JKA and has been studying karate for over 35 years. He began his training at the UConn Karate Club in 1989 where he also received his Mechanical Engineering degree. He is a 3-time member of the U.S. National team, competing in the 6th, 10th and 13th Funakoshi World Cup Karate Championships in 1996 (Osaka), 2006 (Sydney) and 2014 (Tokyo). He is a 7-time SKDI men's kumite champion and a graduate of Master Mori's advanced Instructor Training Program in NYC. He has attended JKA Instructor Seminars in Tokyo throughout the years and is an internationally certified JKA Instructor, Examiner, and Tournament Judge.
Senior Advisor - Margaret Thomas
Sensei Margaret Thomas is a 6th degree black belt with the JKA. She started studying karate in 1975 in Philadelphia and moved to Connecticut in 1979 where she completed an M.S. in Geology. She is an accomplished competitor with regional, national, and international awards spanning more than a decade. She has been a member of the USA Team for both Kumite and Kata numerous times and has been a US Team Selection Judge since 2006. Sensei is a graduate of Master Mori's advanced Instructor Training Course in NYC and holds JKA International qualifications for Instructor, Examiner, and Tournament Judge. She is currently on the Board of Directors for Shotokan Karate Do International.
